The Aeronautical Search and Rescue Service in Finland is organized by Fintraffic ANS in accordance with the Standards and Recommended practices of ICAO Annex 12 in co-operation with the Ministry of the Interior and with authorities.

The Aeronautical Search and Rescue Service is responsible for SAR operations within SRR Helsinki, which coincides with the boundaries of HELSINKI FIR.

Aeronautical Rescue Co-ordination Centre is responsible for the supervision and co-ordination of aeronautical search and rescue operations within SRR Helsinki.

3.1.2. Alert Post (ALP)

Alert Posts are located at all ATS units during their operational hours.

In co-operation between Finland and its neighbouring states the Standards and Recommended Practices of ICAO Annex 12 are applied. Furthermore, special agreements on aeronautical rescue services have been concluded between Finland and the Russian Federation, Finland and Sweden, Finland and Norway and between Finland and Estonia.

When the appropriate SAR authority of a neighbouring state requests the assistance of the Finnish SAR services or forwards its own airborne SAR units to Finnish territory for search and rescue purposes, request shall be addressed to the Aeronautical Rescue Co-ordination Centre for further instructions.

The pilot-in-command shall immediately advise the appropriate ATS unit when observing an accident or having reason to believe that an aircraft is in an emergency or when receiving a distress signal. In such a case the procedures outlined in ICAO Annex 12, chapter 5, are applied.

Distress communication procedures over Finnish SRR are in accordance with ICAO Annex 10 and ICAO DOC 9731 (IAMSAR). The locations, call signs, frequencies and operational hours of ATS units are published in AD 2.

In distress traffic the ACC frequencies, the emergency frequency 121.500 MHZ or other applicable ATS frequency shall be used.

Signals given in ICAO Annex 12 are used in aeronautical Search and Rescue services.
